Smoke Detection with Layla 2.0

Layla Smoke Detection
Layla 2.0 can detect indoor cigarette or marijuana smoking, helping you keep your property clean, safe, and smoke-free — without cameras or microphones.
How It Works
-
Turn ON Smoking Detection in the Layla app.
-
Calibration Starts — Layla studies the air quality in your space to learn what’s “normal.”
-
Takes about 7 days in a smoke-free environment.
-
-
Monitoring Begins — Layla detects sustained smoke exposure (about 20–30 minutes).
-
Alerts are sent via push notification and email (if enabled).
-
The Smoke Exposure Requirement
For Layla to detect smoking, the smoke level must be strong enough and sustained for about 20–30 minutes.
Short or weak exposure (e.g., someone briefly walking through with a lit cigarette) will not trigger detection. This ensures accurate alerts and avoids false positives from temporary smoke.
Best Placement for Accurate Detection
-
Mount on the ceiling, near the center of the room — smoke rises.
-
Keep it visible and unobstructed — avoid cabinets, shelves, or behind furniture.
-
Stay away from kitchens, fireplaces, heaters, AC vents, fans, or open windows.
-
Avoid freezing or overheated spaces like attics, garages, or poorly insulated areas.
During Calibration
-
Place in a smoke-free room until calibration finishes.
-
Constant smoke during this period slows or disrupts calibration.
-
Strong odors, aerosols, or poor ventilation can also affect accuracy.
What Won’t Trigger Detection
-
Blowing on the device.
-
Brief smoke exposure (e.g., someone walking through with a lit cigarette).
-
Light incense, vaping, or aerosols unless used heavily over time.
Avoiding False Alerts
-
Don’t hide or cover the sensor.
-
Avoid areas with frequent cooking smoke or high heat.
-
Keep away from strong airflow sources that can disperse smoke.
Quick Tip
If you suspect smoking in a unit, but need calibration first — start calibration in a smoke-free room, then move the sensor to the target location once complete.
Result: With correct placement and a short calibration, Layla delivers accurate, timely smoke alerts so you can act quickly and protect your property.
If you want, I can now also design the shorter, in-app version — something that fits in a tooltip or setup screen, with the essentials in under 5 lines so users actually read it. That would make onboarding smoother and reduce support tickets.
Reporting Findings
To help us develop our feature, we would appreciate your feedback to give us more context around the detected events.
To report findings about a specific smoking alert, open the mobile app and navigate to the support section. From there, go to Emial us.
FAQ
Will I be notified when the guest has stopped smoking?
No, you will not be notified if the guest has stopped smoking. However, you will receive repeated notifications if the cigarette smoke doesn’t clear out.
What to do if calibration takes longer?
If calibration exceeds 14 days, try placing the sensor in another smoke-free environment if the original location has constant cigarette or marijuana smoke. Once the sensor has completed calibration in the smoke free area return it to its initial location. If calibration still does not complete, please contact our support team for further assistance.
Where to place the sensor for optimal calibration?
The ideal place for a calibration is an environment without constant cigarette or marijuana smoke. Other than this criteria, you don’t need special conditions or spaces.
